10 common resume mistakes (and how to avoid them)
Sometimes it is not a lack of talent — it is a resume with mistakes that get it discarded in seconds. These are the most frequent ones and how to fix them.
1. Spelling mistakes
They instantly cost you credibility. Proofread, use a spell-checker and have someone else read it.
2. The same resume for every job
Tailor the summary and keywords to each posting. A generic resume shows, and performs worse.
3. Listing tasks instead of achievements
"Responsible for…" says nothing. Show results: action verb + what you did + a number.
4. Too long
One page if you have less than 10 years of experience; two at most. Put the essentials first.
5. Irrelevant or excess information
Hobbies that add nothing, experience from 20 years ago, or unnecessary personal data. Cut them.
6. A design that fails the ATS
Complex tables, odd columns or text inside images confuse automated filters. Keep the format clean and export a PDF with real text.
7. Incomplete or unprofessional contact details
A serious email (not "partyanimal@…"), phone and city. Double-check there are no typos in your contact info.
8. No metrics
Numbers add credibility. Whenever you can, quantify your achievements (%, amounts, time, volume).
9. Lying or exaggerating
It surfaces sooner or later, in the interview or on the job. Be honest; present what is real, well.
10. Not reviewing before sending
A final pass avoids the classic "attached is my CV for the role at [another company]". Mind the details.
