What is an ATS and how to pass the filter?

~6 min read · Updated 2026

Sent dozens of resumes and got no reply? Your CV may never have reached human eyes — an ATS filtered it out. Here is what an ATS is, how it reads your resume, and what to do so you are not left out.

What an ATS is

ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System. It is the software many companies use to receive, organize and filter the resumes that arrive for a job opening. Before a recruiter ever sees your CV, the ATS "reads" it, turns it into data and often scores it based on how well it matches the role.

How an ATS reads your resume

The ATS extracts the text from your file and tries to identify sections (experience, education, skills) and keywords. If your CV is built in a way the system cannot read well, your information gets lost or scrambled — and that works against you, even if you are the ideal candidate.

Mistakes that break the filter

  • A resume as an image or scan: the ATS cannot extract the text. Always use a PDF with real text.
  • Complex tables and columns: they can make the text read in the wrong order.
  • Data in the header or footer: some ATS ignore them. Put your contact info in the body.
  • Icons or graphics for key info (for example, bars for language level): the system does not understand them.
  • Unusual or decorative fonts that make text extraction harder.

Keywords: your best ally

The ATS compares your resume against the job description. Read the posting carefully, identify the important terms (tools, technologies, responsibilities) and, if you genuinely meet them, use those same words in your CV. It is not about lying or stuffing keywords, but about speaking the same language as the vacancy.

ATS-friendly checklist

  • A PDF with selectable text, not an image.
  • Standard, well-labelled sections (Experience, Education, Skills).
  • Contact details in the body of the document.
  • A clean design, without complex tables or text inside images.
  • Keywords from the job posting, used honestly.
  • No spelling mistakes (both the ATS and the recruiter notice).

Build a resume that passes the filters

Our templates export a PDF with real text, ready for ATS. The Classic template is ideal for this.

In short

An ATS is not your enemy: it is a filter that rewards clear, well-structured resumes. If you export a PDF with real text, use standard sections and reflect the keywords from the posting, your CV will get where it needs to go — into a recruiter's hands.
